This year marks 20 Years of Bottle and Can recycling in Fiji, Coca-Cola’s ongoing commitment to the sustainability of the packaging.

Coca-Cola Amatil Fiji’s (CCAF) General Manager Roger Hare says 2019 marks 20 Years of Bottle & Can recycling through it’s bottle-buy-back scheme Mission Pacific which started in 1999 to drive positive recycling behavior in Fiji.

“I am extremely proud that we are leading the way in packaging sustainability with this bold move to change the green Sprite bottle to clear.” Jane Bennett, Coca-Cola Oceania’s Brand Manager

Sprite has been synonymous with a green bottle since it launched in 1961. “Sprite’s status among the world’s most recognised brands can largely be attributed to its signature green bottle. However, it is more important our bottles can be recycled to live on and on and that’s why we have made this change. “We want to assure Fijians that although the bottle has changed colour, it’s exactly the same Sprite they have always enjoyed,” she says.

General Manager CCAF Mr. Roger Hare said “as beverage manufacturers it is our responsibility to have a long-term commitment to the sustainability of our packaging.

We encourage other Manufactures and beverages to come onboard with Mission Pacific to help prevent Plastic Bottles & Cans from going to landfill or worse, make their way into the marine environment.

The vast majority of plastic
bottles and cans are able to be, and should be, recycled.” The public are encouraged to bring all empty plastic bottles and cans to Mission Pacific collection centers in Suva, Lautoka and Labasa and are paid FJ$1 per kilo for Coca-Cola Amatil Fiji brands plus those of the scheme’s long-term partners Fiji Water and
Motibhai – which produces Sprint.

Further, Fiji will be one of the first countries in the Pacific to launch Sprite in a clear bottle, rather than the traditional green. Mr. Hare says green plastic bottles are not as in demand as clear plastic for recycling. “At Mission Pacific, we have to separate all coloured plastic from clear and sell it separately for recycling.

I am extremely proud that we are leading the way in packaging sustainability with this bold move to change the green Sprite bottle to clear.”
